For Mary Star, AVP/Branch Manager at Legends Bank’s Ashland City location, banking has always been about much more than transactions. It’s about listening, building relationships and truly getting to know the people you serve.

With 42 years in the banking industry and two and a half years at Legends Bank, Mary brings decades of experience to her role while still approaching each customer relationship with the same personal attention that first drew her to community banking.

As Branch Manager, Mary leads the Ashland City team, develops customer relationships, helps grow the bank’s business and works to ensure customers receive the exceptional, legendary service Legends Bank is known for.

One of her favorite parts of the job is helping employees who are new to banking learn to love the industry as much as she does.

“I like to teach them that listening is a skill and that having a conversation with a customer is the perfect way to learn who they are and what they need from Legends Bank,” Mary said.

Mary follows that same approach with her own customers. She listens to the everyday details they share, whether they’re talking about their families, their jobs, car troubles or what’s happening in their lives, and looks for ways she may be able to help.

Those conversations allow her to understand the whole person behind the account and offer ideas that may help customers make sound financial decisions and plan for the future.

One question Mary often asks prospective customers is not simply where they bank, but who they bank with.

“When I ask prospective customers why they bank at another bank, they often tell me it’s because they’ve banked there for many years,” Mary said. “I always ask them, ‘But WHO do you bank with? WHO is your banker?’”

For Mary, that distinction matters.

“When my customers have a financial need, I want them to call me, their banker,” says Mary. “Because that’s what it’s all about, the relationships we form.”

It’s an approach that reflects what Mary values most about community banking: having someone you know and trust who understands you, your goals and your financial needs.

Proud to Live and Work in Ashland City

Originally from Deerfield, Illinois, Mary now lives and works in Ashland City, and she loves being part of the community she serves.

She appreciates everything from watching the high school Homecoming parade pass directly in front of the bank to decorating Legends Bank’s tree along the Mistletoe Trail and supporting local businesses whenever she can.

Mary also serves as President of the Board of Directors for the Cheatham County Chamber of Commerce, where she enjoys ribbon cuttings, roundtables, and events that support local businesses and the county as a whole.

She is also a member of the Ashland City Civitan Club and has helped with special events honoring local clergy and first responders, as well as collecting toys for Christmas Anonymous, which provides gifts to more than 500 children in Cheatham County each year.

A Hometown Bank Feel

After more than four decades in the industry, Mary says Legends Bank reminds her of the bank where she first began her career.

“I am grateful to be a part of Legends Bank, which reminds me so much of my first bank — a strongly run, community-engaged, hometown bank,” she said. “There are no strangers here, and the CEO is just as liable to walk in the door as a teller from Clarksville.”

From Chicago Sports Legends to Legends Bank

Mary’s long banking career has also included a few memorable customers.

At her first banking job, she had the opportunity to bank the Super Bowl-winning Chicago Bears, the championship-winning Chicago Bulls, and the Chicago Cubs, who remain her personal favorite.

Outside of work and community involvement, however, Mary’s favorite thing to do is spend time with her six grandchildren in the Chicago and Washington, D.C. areas.

After 42 years in banking, Mary still finds fulfillment in the same things that have always mattered most to her: listening to people, building meaningful relationships and being part of a community where customers know exactly who their banker is.

AVP | Business Banker – Downtown Clarksville branch

For Drew Crook, AVP | Business Banker, banking is about much more than numbers. It’s about building relationships, understanding what matters to each customer, and helping local businesses find the right tools and financing to move forward.

Drew has been with Legends Bank for seven years and has spent his entire banking career with the bank. He began as a Personal Banker, later served as Downtown Branch Manager for three and a half years and has spent the past year and a half as a Business Banker.

Helping Local Businesses Grow

In his current role, Drew works closely with local entrepreneurs and small business owners to provide personalized lending solutions, cash flow tools and practical financial guidance.

What he enjoys most is getting to know the people behind the businesses.

“I enjoy the chance to build real, lasting relationships with the people behind their businesses while watching their ideas take root, knowing I played a part in making it possible,” Drew said.

Originally from Erin, Tennessee, Drew has made Clarksville home and stays actively involved throughout the community.

He has served on the Board of the Kiwanis Club of Clarksville for the past three years, helping raise funds and support programs benefiting local children. He also serves as Chairman of the Best of Clarksville event, which raises more than $100,000 each year for local charities, and is a member of the Clarksville Kiwanis Rodeo committee.

Drew is also a Board Member and Ambassador with the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce and serves on its Membership Development Committee. He remains connected with the Austin Peay State University College of Business and is a proud supporter of Austin Peay athletics.

Outside of work and volunteering, Drew enjoys spending time with family, fishing, and traveling.

Continuing to Grow

Drew earned his bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Austin Peay State University in 2021 and his MBA from Murray State University in 2022. He completed the Tennessee Bankers Association’s Southeastern School of Banking in 2025 and is currently enrolled in Louisiana State University’s Graduate School of Banking program, which he expects to complete in 2028.

As he continues growing as a lender, Drew looks forward to serving even more individuals and businesses throughout Clarksville.

National Grandparents Day, happening every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day, is an opportunity to celebrate the older adults who have helped shape our families and communities. It’s also a good time to raise awareness about an issue that can have a devastating impact on older Americans: financial exploitation.

According to the American Bankers Association (ABA), elder financial exploitation is the illegal, unauthorized, or improper use of an older person’s money, property, or assets. It can threaten not only a person’s financial security but also their independence and overall well-being.

Unfortunately, the person responsible isn’t always a stranger. Financial exploitation can involve family members, friends, neighbors, caregivers, business associates, health care providers, or scammers the victim has never met.

Understanding the warning signs and taking a few proactive steps can help older adults and their families better protect their finances.

What Does Elder Financial Exploitation Look Like?

Financial exploitation can take many forms. In some cases, a scammer may contact an older adult by phone or online and attempt to convince them to provide personal information or send money. In others, someone the victim knows and trusts may improperly gain access to accounts or pressure the person into making financial decisions.

Because every situation is different, recognizing unusual changes in financial activity or behavior can be an important first step.

Warning Signs Family and Friends Should Watch For

Family members and trusted friends can play an important role in recognizing potential financial exploitation.

The ABA recommends watching for changes in an older adult’s normal financial habits or behavior. Some potential red flags include:

• Large, frequent, or unexplained withdrawals
• Transfers between accounts that the individual cannot explain
• Sudden unpaid bills or insufficient funds
• Unexpected attempts to wire large amounts of money
• Suspicious signatures or possible forgery on checks
• Checks written as unexplained “loans” or “gifts”
• Bank statements that suddenly stop being delivered to the individual’s home
• New powers of attorney that the individual does not understand
• A new friend, caregiver, or relative suddenly taking an unusually active role in the person’s finances
• Confusion, fear, embarrassment, or reluctance to discuss financial matters

One warning sign by itself does not necessarily mean financial exploitation is occurring. However, significant or unexplained changes are worth paying attention to and discussing with your loved one.

Steps Older Adults Can Take to Protect Their Finances

Being proactive can make it more difficult for someone to gain unauthorized access to your money or personal information.

Start by protecting sensitive documents. Shred bank statements, receipts, and unused credit card offers before disposing of them, and keep checkbooks, account statements, and other financial information in a secure location.

Be equally cautious about sharing information. Never provide your Social Security number, bank account information, or other sensitive financial details to an unexpected caller. If someone contacts you claiming to represent a trusted company or financial institution, consider ending the call and contacting the organization directly using a phone number you know is legitimate.

The ABA also recommends taking your time before making financial decisions. Be cautious when someone pressures you to act immediately, and ask for information in writing when appropriate. If you don’t understand a financial document or decision, consider seeking a second opinion from a trusted financial professional or attorney before signing anything. And if you have questions or concerns about your Legends Bank accounts, our team is always here to help.

And remember: if something doesn’t feel right, pay attention to that instinct. Scammers and financial exploiters can be convincing, and creating a sense of urgency or trust is often part of their approach.

Know and Monitor Your Accounts

Regularly reviewing your financial accounts can help you identify suspicious activity sooner.

Look through bank and credit card statements and pay attention to withdrawals, purchases, transfers, or other activity you don’t recognize. The sooner something unusual is identified, the sooner you can take action.

While these safeguards provide an additional layer of protection, it’s still important to stay aware of your account activity and reach out promptly if something doesn’t look right.

After years of friendly competition, the Legends Bank team earned the 2026 Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids’ Sake Bankers Challenge title, raising $7,665 to support Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarksville.

The annual Bankers Challenge brought local banks and financial institutions together on August 20, 2026, at the Pinnacle Event Center for an evening of bowling, fundraising, and fun. Now in its 44th year, the event has become one of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarksville’s largest annual fundraisers, with funds raised helping support youth throughout Clarksville, Montgomery County, and surrounding communities.

Coming Together for Local Youth

For Legends Bank, the road to this year’s win started well before anyone stepped onto the lanes.

Branches across the bank took on their own fundraising challenges, encouraging employees, customers, friends, and supporters to get involved. Together, those efforts helped Legends Bank raise $7,665, the highest total among participating financial institutions in this year’s Bankers Challenge.

The event itself brought plenty of laughs, camaraderie, and a little friendly rivalry, but the real victory was the opportunity to support an organization making a lasting difference in the lives of local young people.

“Congratulations to Legends Bank on winning the 2026 Bankers Challenge! We are beyond grateful for their continued support and partnership,” said Sandra Moss, Executive Director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarksville. Their commitment to serving the community allows us to help young people reach their full potential.”

Supporting the Mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarksville works to create and support meaningful mentoring relationships that help young people reach their potential.

The organization offers several mentoring opportunities, including school-based and community-based one-to-one programs, as well as STEM and sports-focused group mentoring. Its service area includes Montgomery, Houston, Stewart, Humphreys, Hickman, Perry, and Decatur counties.

For 2026, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Clarksville has set a goal of serving more than 150 young people. The Bankers Challenge plays an important role in helping make that work possible by bringing local financial institutions together to raise funds and awareness for the organization’s mentoring programs.

While the Bankers Challenge may come with bragging rights, its purpose has always been about much more than the final score.

The event gives local financial institutions an opportunity to come together around a shared goal: helping provide young people with strong, supportive relationships and opportunities for a brighter future.

Each year, the Game Changer Charity Clay Shoot brings together local businesses, community members, and Legends Bank employees for a morning of friendly competition, fellowship, and giving back. This year, proceeds from the event will benefit Judy’s Hope, a Clarksville nonprofit dedicated to helping women and their children move toward stability, independence, and a brighter future.

Supporting Judy’s Hope

Judy’s Hope provides women and their children with a safe, Christ-centered environment and transitional tiny-house housing while they work toward greater independence.

Through a five-phase program, participants receive support focused on their physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. The program helps women develop healthy habits, pursue stable employment, build greater self-sufficiency, and prepare for independent living.

Founded by Karen Powers, Judy’s Hope was created to provide stability, encouragement, and resources to women and children who may not otherwise have a strong support system. Its work is made possible through the support of volunteers, churches, businesses, donors, and other members of the Clarksville community.

Legends Bank is honored to support an organization making such a meaningful difference for local families.

Giving Back Through #LegendsLift

The Game Changer Charity Clay Shoot is another example of #LegendsLift in action and Legends Bank’s continued commitment to investing in the communities we call home.

Registration is $100 per shooter, with four-person teams welcome. Registration ends September 25, 2026.

Shooters are responsible for providing their own ammunition and shotguns. Limited shotgun rentals and carts are available through Cross Creek Clays.

After more than 23 years with Legends Bank and a distinguished 35-year career in banking, Senior Vice President Mike Rainey is retiring, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and community service.

A Clarksville High School graduate, Rainey earned his Bachelor of Business Administration from Austin Peay State University in 1983 and is a graduate of both the Barret School of Banking and Leadership Clarksville. Throughout his career, he has been committed not only to serving customers but also to investing in the community he has called home for decades.

Rainey joined Legends Bank in 2003 and has been an integral part of the bank’s growth and success for more than two decades. Known for his steady leadership, commitment to customers, and willingness to mentor others, he leaves behind a lasting legacy that extends throughout the organization.

“Mike has been a valued member of our team for more than 23 years,” said Tommy Bates, President & CEO of Legends Bank. “Throughout his career, he has exemplified what it means to be a team player, mentoring many of our young lenders and serving faithfully on our Management Loan Committee for the past several years. We are deeply grateful for his many contributions to the bank and the positive impact he has had on both our customers and colleagues.

“On a personal note, I will miss seeing him around the bank. Mike, thank you for your dedicated service. We wish you all the best and a long, happy, and well-deserved retirement.”

Beyond banking, Rainey has devoted countless hours to serving Clarksville and Montgomery County through civic and nonprofit leadership. His community involvement has included serving as Campaign Chair and Past President of United Way of Clarksville-Montgomery County, Past President of the Clarksville Rotary Club, Past Chairman of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Northwest Middle Tennessee, and Past President of the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce.

Today, he continues to serve as a director for the Tennessee Baptist Mission Board and as a member of the Austin Peay State University Board of Trustees. He is also a member of Second Mile Church.

“Mike’s contribution and commitment to Legends Bank and our community over the past 23-plus years is immeasurable,” said Jeremy Hoard, Executive Vice President & Chief Banking Officer. “He will be missed dearly, but his leadership, legacy, and impact on our company will continue to be felt for many years to come. I am incredibly grateful to have had Mike on our team and am excited for him and his family as they begin this well-earned next chapter.”

Reflecting on his career, Rainey expressed gratitude for the relationships he built during his time at Legends Bank.

As he begins retirement, Legends Bank celebrates Mike’s remarkable career and thanks him for his unwavering dedication to the bank, its customers, and the Clarksville community. His leadership and service have left a lasting mark on the organization, and his influence will continue to be felt for years to come.

This month, we’re highlighting Bob Belvin, Business Development Officer, whose passion for connecting with local businesses and serving the community helps strengthen the relationships that make Legends Bank unique.

Building Relationships That Matter

Bob has been with Legends Bank for four and a half years, bringing more than three decades of experience in business development and sales. As Business Development Officer, he works across all Legends Bank markets, connecting with local businesses, community leaders, and professionals to identify opportunities where Legends Bank can help customers grow and succeed.

On any given day, you’ll find Bob meeting with branch managers and lenders, attending networking events, presenting at seminars, or sharing the Legends Bank story throughout the community.

What does he enjoy most about his role?

“Being out and visible is priority one for me. It makes all the difference,” says Bob. “Coming from a 32-year career in telecom sales, my role at Legends Bank is the complete opposite of the grind of corporate America. I actually feel like I’m helping people instead of just chasing numbers and sales.”

A Consultative Approach

Bob believes every business is different, and finding the right banking partner starts with listening.

One of the ways he helps customers succeed is by taking a consultative approach and connecting them with the Legends Bank team member best suited to help them achieve their goals.

When speaking with business owners, Bob often shares this advice:

“Always be looking ahead and trying to identify trends in your business and be as prepared as possible for quick shifts.”

He also believes every business owner should surround themselves with trusted advisors, including an attorney, CPA, financial advisor, insurance agent, and banker, to help navigate challenges and plan for the future.

A Familiar Face in Clarksville

A Clarksville native, Bob has deep roots in the community and enjoys staying involved both professionally and personally.

Outside of Legends Bank, sports fans may recognize him from ESPN+, where he covers college football and basketball throughout the region. He also writes weekly sports columns during football and basketball seasons, serves as the public address announcer for Kirkwood High School, and regularly contributes to local and regional sports broadcasts. This fall, he’ll even be launching his own podcast.

Bob also serves on the Board of Directors for the Better Business Bureau of Middle Tennessee & Southern Kentucky and volunteers on advisory committees for several local nonprofit organizations. During the summer, he enjoys spending time on the water with his wife and family.

A Few Fun Facts

Bob and his wife have a special story: they first met as teenagers at church and, nine years later, were married in that very same church, just 75 feet from where they first met.
